I painted this portrait for my friend Linda and her horse “Slew Boy” a few years ago. At the time, Slew and her other two geldings were living at the Osuna Ranch while their at-home pastures were given a rest. Linda set up a tent at the far end of the pastures where she and friends could gather and visit with the boys. We spent many Sundays under the shade of the open-air tent watching the boys and sharing horse stories.
Slew Boy was fascinated with this set-up He’d come over to us, reaching his beautiful head through the gauze-like curtains which draped the sides of the tent while we all stroked and loved on him. His curiosity was infectious. It was obvious he wanted to step inside the tent to be with us.
On the last day of their stay at the Ranch, Linda hosted a party. Assuming the special event was planned just for him, Slew finally had his chance to get into the tent where he proceeded to make his way carefully up to the salad bar and help himself to the organic fruits and vegetables on display.
Never missing a step, bumping a chair or touching the sides of this smaller-than-a-stall enclosure, Slew touched instead the hearts of everyone with his gentle message: Curiosity is a healthy activity. When you allow yourself to be open to anything……anything can happen.
