There is much talk in the world of working with horses (especially in training them) about respect. It’s a common belief that “The horse must respect you if you are to have a solid understanding”. According to most of the horses I’ve talked with the opposite is equally important. Their concepts are “A person who offers genuine respect to the horse invites the horse to offer the same in return. Respect is an act of partnership that goes both ways”.
As with all animals, horses know when we are being disingenuous and when we are being truthful. When we approach them with an open heart and a willingness to respect their autonomy…recognizing their unique way of looking at things, 9 times out of 10 they are generously willing to give us all they have.
