Animals read us. Whether we are aware of it or not…..they sense what’s really going on inside us. Today we had our annual termite inspection for the house…..and I was surprised at the reaction of Bella and The Orange Boys to this nice young man who works for the extermination company. They were completely undone by his presence. Bella was trembling, the boys made haste to find hiding spots. In spite of the fact that he was a kind person who obviously loved animals, we had a tense hour while he did his job of inspecting the house. After he left, I thought about how upset everyone was.
And then I realized…..I have a very strong belief about exterminating anything or anyone, even termites. I truly believe that killing is not a solution to any problem. So in spite of the fact that this extermination company uses Orange Oil products (instead of highly toxic chemicals) and in spite of the fact that in California, managing termites in one’s home is a necessity, our animals picked up on my internal conflict of having someone in our home who represented extermination. They interpreted his presence as a threat because they could sense my unconscious discomfort.
Today’s events reminded me how our beloved animal companions teach us to stay in touch with ourselves…..and how important it is to be truthful about how we really feel.
