To Love an Animal

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened”  Anatole France

Is there a difference between the way we love another human being and the way we love an animal being?  Perhaps in loving our animals, we might trust deeper or open ourselves wider without fear of being hurt or betrayed.  Loving a human is sometimes more complicated….or so it would seem.

I think animals are in our lives for many reasons, but one of them is to teach us to love with all our hearts, with no fear and with complete faith that in so doing we awaken our souls.

The book I’m currently reading addresses the idea that humans developed our capacity for love, sympathy, empathy and compassion because of our long association with dogs.
A compelling argument is presented on the co-evolution of dogs with humans…I recommend “The Dog Who Couldn’t Stop Loving” by Jeffey Moussaieff Masson (available at Costco). He also wrote “When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals” which was excellent.

Thank you Connie for the wonderful reading recommendations. I am familiar with Jeffey Moussaieff’s books…they are so inspiring and thought provoking. They help bring truth and awareness to so many regarding the emotional lives of all animals….a true gift!
