A few days ago, while bringing Romeo in from his pasture turn-out I stopped to chat with a woman who was hand-walking her horse. It was a beautiful, warm day…Romey was standing quietly by my side as we visited.
After a few minutes, I noticed a gentle pull on the lead rope. I looked over and there was my sweet boy, head drooped, eyes closed….sound asleep. I reached around and placed my hand on that soft spot along his nose, just above the muzzle and he rested his head in my hand, continuing to snooze. It was the first time he’d ever napped like this…cuddling me in the process.
We stood like that for a long time. As I was drinking in the moment of complete and utter trust between us, my heart swelled with wonder. The gifts we receive from our equine partners are always sweet, but is especially true of those gifts that come when we least expect them.
